About Us
Some may wonder why should a group of citizens push for the transformation of Downtown Vancouver into a place for people. Isn’t this the responsibility of local government?
This line of thinking ignores the fact that government exists in order to respond to the needs of the people. If the people do not make their needs clear, it is much less likely government will implement anything. It is even less likely when the actions require significant funding and may encounter small but determined opposition.
Downtown For The People exists is to make a people-first Downtown a reality. This will likely involve different levels of advocacy, research, stakeholder engagement and public outreach. Its specific role will evolve depending on the situation and how other parties choose to act.
The High Line in New York City provides a good example of how a citizen-led initiative prompted individuals, corporations and government to invest in the creative reuse of infrastructure, creating a now treasured landmark.
